In ancient times, the mountainous terrain of Guizhou made visiting friends and family a challenging undertaking. This led the local Dong people to cherish every opportunity to meet. As a result, the Dong people have developed a unique custom:when friends and family from a neighboring village visit, they bring with them thoughtful gifts prepared with great care. They wrap eggs and rice wine in straw, carry them on poles and decorate bamboo branches with colorful towels.
